Абстракт This study presents novel findings on the occurrence and dynamics of filamentous green algae Spirogyra sp. in the open pelagic waters of Lake Baikal, detected through decadal zooplankton monitoring at the long-term sampling site “Point No. 1″ from 2014 to 2023. Spirogyra filaments appeared intermittently in zooplankton samples with peak presence up to 38% frequency between 2015 and 2019, disappearing during 2020–2022 and reemerging in 2023. Seasonal and vertical distribution patterns revealed maximal abundance in summer–autumn and presence throughout the water column to 250 m depth during peak years. Spirogyra has been observed in the pelagic zone of Lake Baikal during years when it thrived in coastal regions, coinciding with periods of reduced water inflow and elevated water temperatures. These findings demonstrate that zooplankton monitoring can serve as an effective tool to detect benthic algal events extending into pelagic zones, underscoring the need for integrated littoral and pelagic ecosystem monitoring.
