Абстракт Objective: Microalgae are a source of various biologically active substances, carotenoids, in partiular fucoxanthin is a carotenoids of diatom microalgae which exhibits antioxidant, antimicrobial, antitumor and anti-inflammatory activity promising for the treatment of a wide range of pathologies in humans and animals. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of alcoholic and oil extract of fucoxanthin on biochemical parameters and cytokine level in the serum of mice after their intragastric administration. Material and methods: Fucoxanthin extracts from the microalgae Nanofrustulum shiloi were used. Balb/c mice were intragastrically administered 0.5 mL of oil (500 μg/mL) or alcohol (187.5 μg/mL) extract of fucoxanthin, animals of the comparison group were administered 0.5 mL of olive oil or 45% ethyl alcohol once a day for 5 days. On the 8th day the activity of liver aminotransferases, the content of albumin, triglycerides, cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL), urea, uric acid, creatinine, lactate, stable metabolites of nitric oxide (NO) (nitrites), cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, IFN-γ) were determined in the blood serum using ELISA with photometric detection. Results and discussion: In the comparison group, ethyl alcohol promoted to the increase in the activity of ALT, AST, triglycerides, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, nitrites, IL-10, IFN-γ and TNF-α in the blood serum compared to intact animals. The administration of fucoxanthin alcoholic extract increased the level of LDL, HDL, uric acid, TNF-α and decreased the activity of ALT, AST, albumin, cholesterol, uric acid, creatinine, IL-6 compared to the control. In the group of animals receiving olive oil, a decrease in the concentration of triglycerides, cholesterol, urea, uric acid, ALT and AST in the blood serum was observed, but the content of LDL, HDL, nitrites increased compared to the control. Administration of fucoxanthin oil extract to animals contributed to a decrease in the levels of albumin, triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL, uric acid, ALT and AST, lactate, IL-6, IL-10 compared to the control. Conclusion: Thus, it has been established that FX in Balb/c mice promoted the decreased synthetic function of the liver, as evidenced by changes in the concentration of albumin, triglycerides, uric acid, affects energy metabolism (creatinine, lactate), the stability of cell membranes (cholesterol, LDL and HDL), transaminase activity, and the level of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the blood serum.
