Абстракт Fluid methane discharge fluxes from bottom sediments were measured (using the trapping method) in four areas of the Chernaya River estuarine zone. The sampling stations were characterized by different hydrological–hydrochemical conditions: the water samples differed in salinity, content of biogenic elements of nitrogen and phosphorus complexes (NO−2 from 12.2 to 29 μg L–1; NO−3 from 294 to 869 μg L–1; NH+4 from 57.9 to 130 μg L–1; and H2PO4 from 28.2 to 127.8 μg L–1), and geochemical characteristics of the bottom sediments. The mineral forms of nitrogen and phosphorus, porosity, and sediment moisture decreased against the salinity gradient, i.e., from the river source to its mouth. A similar trend was determined for methane concentration in the bottom sediments and water at the surveyed stations. Methane concentration in bottom sediments at brackish-water Stations 1 and 2 was two orders of magnitude lower than at freshwater Stations 3 and 4, where the concentration reached 1.1 mmol dm–3. Methane content in the pore water of the bottom sediments did not exceed the calculated solubility values, which ranged from 1.53 to 1.68 mmol L–1. The range of average methane concentrations in water at the studied stations varied from 285 to 813 nmol L–1. The variations in methane concentrations in the water show an oscillatory pattern, which is presumably related to wave processes in the estuary. The variations in methane concentration in the fluid traps over time define a linear trend, which allowed us to calculate the flow of dissolved methane from the bottom sediments. For stations 3 and 4 upstream of the Chernaya River, the flow was 4 and 293 mmol m–2 day–1, respectively. Significantly lower flows were calculated for brackish-water stations 1 and 2 (0.3 and 0.4 mmol m–2 day–1), which is likely explained the life activity of methanotrophic bacteria, where sulfate-dependent oxidation of methane is carried out in the upper layer of the bottom sediments in the presence of the sulfate ion.
